Introduced in 1877, the original 50 locomotives were manufactured by Beyer Peacock. Eventually the number grew to 77, with the balance being supplied by Beyer Peacock and a local builder, Henry Vale. Certain modifications were introduced from 1891 to improve the usefulness of the 0-6-0s as they took up a variety of duties around the state. A 25-mph speed limit (40-km/h) was imposed because of the rigid wheelbase and they were then concentrated on shunting and light branch line duties. They remained in use up until the emergence of the 48 class diesel electric locomotive in the 1960s.
