Introduced from 1896 for freight duties, the D50 class locomotive and its derivatives were destined to become the most plentiful class of locomotive on the system. In all 290 locomotives were built up until 1912. They were equipted with Belpaire boilers and Allen straight link valve gear. Most were superheated from 1912 and all had the familiar porthole cab. Five builders were used, Beyer Peacock (151), Dubs & Co (5), Neilson Reid & Co (10), North British Locomotive Co (84) and Clyde Engineering (30). They remained in use right up until the end of steam.
