The South Australian Railways ordered a total of 44 locomotives of the Alco DL531 type for use on both its broad gauge and narrow gauge lines.
These locomotives were of similar specifications to the New South Wales 48 class.
They were also used on standard gauge and are still in use today.

The kit is the result of an upgrade of the previously introduced 48 class loco.
